05. Concept Development – Colour

The colour palette was inspired greatly from the costumes of ‘The Joker’ and ‘The Mad Hatter’. Everything was first drawn in pencil and then coloured in with promarkers.

I wanted to use yellow for the bow tie as it is a complimentary colour with purple, which is to be the colour of the jacket. However a bright orange with ticks of yellow suited him better. I also experimented with the hair giving it shades of purple too, however due to the fact that the jacket was going to be purple I thought of leaving him with a salt and pepper look.
I used the colour ‘light fawn’ for his hands and ‘light flesh’ to bring out the contrasts. I used the same colour palette for his face. I added a touch of green to his eyes and used a ‘rose pink’ to fill in his gyms. His lips where coloured in black and his nails where left white.

His suit jacket was shaded with a ‘light amatista’ purple and I tried to add feel to it by showing creases with a ‘purple violet’.  Furthermore using ‘Ice grey 2’ I added a circular pattern to his waistcoat to try and make it a bit more interesting and give it a darker shade.
I also filled in the Damask patterns on the wall with an ‘Ice grey 4’.

For the background I chose a dark ‘berry red’. Red is the colour of blood. The sight of blood usually means something is wrong. Thus this further indicates that the trick actually went wrong. Although it was a bit of a risk to use red in the background, since it is a warm colour one’s eye tends to fall on it first, I feel that it really worked and it brought out the colours of the characters even more.
Finally I filled the hat with black, added grey touches to the rabbit and coloured his eyes with an orange-yellow.

Being only the second time using promarkers I am very pleased with the way it turned out.
