01. Concept Development – Main Character

The character I chose to create is a malevolent human magician. Being my first time drawing character’s I did research on how to actually create such a character. I found out that for a character to look evil and for the pleasure of evil itself the more humanising he looks the greater the effect.

I started off by planning the angle of the head. To make the best use of perspective, I chose to draw his body to an angle, where he would not be looking directly at the viewer but rather at an imaginary audience.

The hair was the next important step. I found an online Japanese comic website which featured different hairstyles. Thus I began sketching out the best ones. After a few sketches I realised that the longer the hair the greater of an evil look it gives the character. Having straight down hair gives a more serene look whilst upright hair appeals more to villains.

Once the hairstyle was chosen I know had to think about a magician’s attire. I wanted to definitely include a top hat as it is the one of the main props that is shown throughout the film of ‘The Prestige’, giving it some significant value.

My favourite all time villain is the joker. There have been many versions of the joker however I decided to go with the ‘Batman Arkham City’ version for two reasons. The first being his facial features are anything but moral. Moreover his choices of clothing are exactly what I picture a magician wearing.

Thus inspired by the joker’s formal wear, I decided to sketch a few clothing items.

Once his clothes and hair where decided it was now time to tackle the face which in my opinion was the hardest part. Again I looked for inspiration from the character face of The Joker. I looked at game faces as well as other sketches.

I wanted to capture a position which showed a sense of movement and a more natural look. Not completely satisfied with my work, especially the chin, I looked for more inspiration and found some in the photo of Johnny Depp portraying the Mad Hatter in the 2010 movie of Alice in Wonderland.
