Time, Movement and Stillness in Film - What is Film?

Movement
Movement is the quality of suggesting motion in a work of art. Movement is usually created through suspense, sudden change, music, camera movement, or perspective.

Stillness
Stillness is the state or an instance of being quiet. Stillness could be brought about through sound, which makes a film feel more dramatic or either through the picture itself.

Time
Without time there wouldn't be a movie.  Time is shown through the age of characters, flash forwards, or even flash backs.

What is Film?
    • Film reel
    • Story - must have some narrative
    • Story has a message
    • Biography - background of the character
    • Succession of frames

A film is a series of still images which, when shown on a screen, creates the illusion of moving images. Television and film use certain common conventions often referred to as the 'grammar' of these audio-visual media. This list includes some of the most important conventions for conveying meaning through particular camera and editing techniques (as well as some of the specialised vocabulary of film production).

In film, film grammar is defined as follows:
  • A frame is a single still image
  • A shot is a single continuous recording made by a camera.
  • A scene is a series of related shots.
  • A sequence is a series of scenes which together tell a major part of an entire story, such as that contained in a complete movie.

Stages of production
    • Pre-production; anything to do with filming
    • Production; script story board actors
    • Post production; all the editing done at production houses each scene by scene

Storyboarding (example Taxi driver 1976)

  • Mise-en-scene (placed in the scene)
